my son has strep throat, so the doctor gave him some antibiotics. he started taking it on monday, but up to today, hes still coughing, runny/stuffy nose and still has a fever of 101. I give him motrin and the fever goes down SOMETIME. but he still a little hot. could it be that the antibiotic isnt working? ive read that the antibiotics are suppose to start working within 24 hrs of giving it. should i wait and see or should i call the doctor again?

it takes time. the most important thing is to take the meds for the full course-finish all of them!

If the infection is indeed, strep, you will see improvement of his symptoms this afternoon. They will not go away completely but it sounds like he is already on the mend. Continue to give him fluids, use tylenol or motrin every 4 to 6 hours and allow him to rest.
If the infection is viral and not bacterial, the antibiotics will not help. Was a culture done on this throat? If not, I suggest you go back and have it done to determine what organism is causing the infection.

Antibiotics do start working immediatey but you may not see improvement for days. I had strep so bad one time that I had to have two rounds of antibiotics. But the last time I took a shot and was feeling much better the next day. If your concerned give your doctor a call. They may want to try something different.

they normally start to work within 72 hours but they only stop the spreed of bacterial infections and not clear it up, continue to give a child pain relief for fever and pain, complete the course of antibiotics if nothing has changed or he gets worse before finishing the course then contact your Dr, try and give the medicine at the same time everyday till complete and not miss any

Antibiotics take time to kill all of the bacteria they need to. If, in around 3 days, there is still no change in temperature or his condition, you might want to check in with either your pharmacist or physician. The best thing to do in the mean time is give him good all-around care. Lots of fluid with vitamin C (orange juice is great), a warm bed, and keep his area clean and sanitary so there are no germs around him to slow down the process. The vitamin C is great for the immune system and will assist the antibiotics.

Yes 24 hours is right - you should wait till then to see if thw symptoms subside. But until then just have him induce A LOT of fluids - he needs the electrolytes and hydration.
You want a runny nose over a stuffy nose. Have him use tissues to blow out the muscus - instead of having him recyle the mucus back into the respiratory system.

I have always been told by my doctor it generally takes about three days for the antibiotic to work, if it doesn’t work by then it is time to call the doctor.
