I have mild mvp with some regurg and have a dentist appointment. Extraction, cleaning etc. I want to know now that antibiotics arent the norm, what I could take NATURALLY, instead. (I already eat organic yogurt almost everyday)
I already did my research and so I know antibiotics are not the thing anymore. STILL i would like to keep up my system when I go.

You should take the antibiotics. They are prescribed for a good reason - you could develop infective endocarditis, which is bad. You could try taking ‘natural’ things such as horse manure or a large piece of wood, but they won’t help.

I’m not sure if you’re looking for something other then antibiotics because you WANT something, or now that there’s new stats on premeds you’re looking for something else to take. Because according to the new information, you don’t actually need premeds anymore for mitral valve prolapse, even if there’s is some regurgitation. The amount of people on the antibiotics to prevent infective endocarditis was compared to the amount of people that ended up with allergies to the meds or problems with the meds, results were found, etc, and it turns out that it isn’t worth it to take the meds in cases like mvp.
So if you talk to your doctor you can get them to give you a note or something to bring to your dentist to tell them you don’t need premeds anymore.
This doesn’t tell you something naturally to do instead, but that’s because you no longer need anything so I figured I’d just help with that part.
*edit* The reasons they changed the necessity of them though was because it wasn’t benefiting people with MVP and other medical conditions enough. I mean it’s like you’re trying to find a substitute for something that you don’t need. My thoughts are just to keep healthy, take your vitamins and stuff. And do your best job of brushing and flossing. The healthier your gums and teeth are, the better your appointments will be so that there won’t be much bleeding or anything. That’s probably the best thing you can do!

Jordana is correct.
The protocol has changed according to the heart association.
But most MD’s don’t know about it yet.
Call your MD and tell him/her you’ve heard the protocol has changed for pre-med-mvp. Also if you have Non-regugitating MVP =mild-you never did need the pre-med of antibiotics. Find out.
I’m also into alternative meds. There is no substitute for antibiotics-pro-biotics won’t help with this-one has nothing to do with the other.
Call you MD

The American Heart Association has changed their position on antibiotics for dental work. You should check with your doctor, however. Most people still requiring it had heart surgery as small children, valve replacements, or history of heart infection (to name a few). This is a recent change (June I think) and I find that many dentists and most doctors may not be up on the most current recommendations. Their new position is that, while you are still at risk, they could not prove that taking antibiotics prevented any of the heart infections that occured over the years. They now say tht the best thing is just good home care.

The rules changed recently. You should talk to your general practitioner. They no longer suggest taking an antibiotic as a preventative before dental visits for mitral valve prolapse.
