Can an antibiotic lower the effective rate of birth control pills ?
Posted on December 13th, 2008 in Antibiotics
Lady T asked:
I have been taking YAZ since May of this year and the antibiotic Terbafine since June of this year. I read recently that antibiotics can cause birth control pills not to work properly. I recently had unprotected sex and am now worried that I may be pregnant. The birth control in my opinion is working great...I have lighter periods less cramps, little to no nausea, and my periods are shorter. Any help would be greatly appreciated THANKS!!

Yes it is true~ but only with certain antibiotics, not all. You need to ask your doctor.

Yes, it certainly can lower the effectiveness.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but if it’s been about 10 days since you’ve had unprotected sex, take a test to ease your mind. Otherwise, when on an antibiotic, wrap it up!!!
Some antibiotics lower the effectivness and a few wipe out what birth control does completely. ( i do not believe that is one of them )

YES. Antibiotics lower the effectiveness of all birth control pills. Read the paperwork you got with your Rx to see what effect they have on the type you are taking. Then if still in doubt see your doctor. Have sex when you are ready to become a mom because even with protection pregnancy can happen.
May you be blessed.

Yes. My daughter had a fling with her b/f thinking her birth control would protect her. She forgot to take into account that she had just finished an anti-biotic course a week previously. Our grand-daughter is now 4 years old!!! And no, the b/f didn’t head for the hills when he heard of the pregnancy. He died in a car crash 6 months later.
