Can you have an allergic reaction from an antibiotic after using it for the full 10 days?

My son is 13 years old and just finished an antibiotic. The ten day prescription ran out last night. When he woke up this morning he has a rash on his arms, neck, chest, and back. It was not noticeable so I told him to watch it and call me if it gets any worse. An hour later he calls me and it is all over his body and you can see it very clear. His doctor says it is a reaction from the antibiotic. Give him some benadryl and he should be fine. Is this possible?

Yes, you can have an allergic reaction on the first dose of an antibiotic, or the last dose. I would do as the Doctor says and if there is any visible swelling or the child is having a hard time breathing, go to the ER. May I ask what the antibiotic was? Some have a higher allergy rate than others…

Yes….
You could develop an allergic reaction after taking the full course of antibiotics. Most reactions occur earlier in the course, but it could happen even after a week to ten days later. He needs to stay away from this particular medication.
