My normal temperature runs between 96.5-97.5 but for the past two weeks it has been between 98-99.5 my Doctor gave me an antibiotic and I wanted to know how long should it take for my fever to go down? I took the medicine yesterday once and today twice but my fever is still between 98.9-99.3

Don’t worry about trying to get your fever down. A fever is your bodies way of fighting off the infection. Fevers are actually good for you unless they are extremely high. You can take some Tylenol and that does help a little. Give the antibiotic 3-5 days to work.

It will take awhile, because the antibiotic has to kill the majority of the bacteria whose toxins are creating the fever. It may take a few days. Be sure to complete the prescription, even if the fever goes down and you feel better before it’s all used up. This is necessary to knock down the small numbers of bacteria still in your system, so they don’t flare up again.

Generally speaking within 3 days after starting an antibiotic, a fever should go back down to normal. However given that your temperature usually runs low, I wouldn’t be too concerned if it doesn’t get back down to your normal. The thing with people who usually run a little bit low is that you will go through periods where it fluctuates and that is perfectly normal. Some people even just run higher (in the normal range) as they age. Your fever isn’t that high even given that it’s higher than usual because people who have a normal temperature (98.6) can have a fever up to but not including 102 and it is considered to be low grade. Just relax and let the medicine do it’s work. Good Luck!
