If you have the flu or something you need to take an antibiotic for how long before you aren't contagious once you start taking the antibiotic? I have been told 3 different things. Twenty four hours, 48 hours and 72hours. Which is correct?

I'm taking Ampicillin 500 mg 4x/day and am on Day 2.5 and haven't seen any changes. I know docs can do cultures to help determine the type of bacteria (long story-don't want to involve docs), but I'm just wondering if I'm taking the right type of antibiotic to cover an array of bacterial infections and when to expect to see some kind of recovery. (I know to take all of the medication even if I feel better.)
Thanks for your help!

Penicillin was the first antibiotic discovered and used. Recently however, some bacteria have shown resistance to this antibiotic.

I was placed on an IV antibiotic called Ancef (2 grams every 6 hours) for chronic osteomylitis, along with a staphylococcus aurous, and pseudomonas infection. Among all the side effects that I get, the nausea seems to be getting worse as the days go by. Any ideas if there is something I can do to feel better? The nausea kicks in after the drug is pumped? Or could the nausea be caused by something else?

My dental hygenist has seen this organism swimming on a slide with a sample of my saliva. The dentist wants me to take a very strong antibiotic for 2 weeks. She also wants my husband to take it although after 2 attempts they have not seen this parasite on his sample. Both of our mouths are healthy and we see the dentist 2 times a year. My health is fine and I'm having a hard time with taking an antibiotic when I feel fine and have no symptoms. But I don't want to ignore the dentist's advice either.
